Zodiac-Ushi (Ox)

Last year we celebrated the Year of the Rat 鼠年 with a Hanabi collaboration with 5th Generation Seiun Souemon Hara to make a small batch of bronze sculptures based on the Chinese zodiac animals.

The craft of the Hara family is created by the wisdom and ambition of their ancestors to add value to life and contribute back to the rich nature of Japan. It was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property by the prefecture in 1978. Due to the nature of the craft, organic process and material, each object produced is unique and ages beautifully over generations.

Each piece is personally made by master craftsman Hara san at their ancestral home cum atelier in Kashiwazaki. From hand sculpting with bee wax to molding, casting, polishing and also the special smoking technique with burnt rice stem to achieve the charred effect on the body.

The response last year to the mouse, Ne was great and we really enjoyed the collaboration and agreed to continue growing the annual Chinese zodiac animals into a series.
This year we are happy to share that Ushi.
